Somerset Archer Selected for Great Britain Squad

Claire Davy of the University of Bath Archery Club has been selected for the Great Britain Compound Squad for 2003.  This rounds off a very successful year for Claire, who only started shooting Compound in July 2001.  Claire's achievements in the last year include collecting a full set of FITA Stars (except the purple, but that would require a world record) and smashing the county and regional FITA and Hereford records.

The Margaret Lewis Award

This is an annual award in Margaret's name for the most outstanding junior each year; this can be for achievement, perseverance, or any other special qualities. Nominations must come through Clubs with a breif resume of why the award should go to the nominee. Nominations must be received by the County Secretary before the 31st December for consideration at the January Management Meeting and the medal will be presented at the AGM or other suitable occasion.

This year we had a number of nominations to consider - difficult, but much better than just one! After a little discussion in was decided that the award for last year should go to Rachel Dring of Puriton Gold Juniors who, was very please with the award presented to her at the Junior Champs on the 29th of June.

We are the CHAMPIONS

At the Inter-Counties Shoot in Exeter on the 16th. of September the archers representing Somerset put in a great team performance to win the overall team trophy. The team consisted of the following archers,

The team manager who spent most of his time walking up and down the line encouraging the team in many unique ways was of course Ernie Chapman.

This year there were some good scores shot by Somerset archers at the selection shoots and more pre-qualifying scores shot than ever before. We felt that if things went right we stood a good chance this year - though no-one was tempting fate by saying too much!! On the day, the weather was not conducucive to good scores - the wind was very variable, both in strength and direction - but everyone did their best and this was enough to win by a margin of exactly 100 points (The last time Somerset were the Regional Champions was 1988!)

WELL DONE EVERYONE!
