National Indoor Barebow Championships

At the National Barebow Indoor Championships Andrew, Jane and Louise Rees & William Wade all competed, shooting a single FITA 18 round.  Jane and Andrew both finished second, with Louise winning her age group. William also shot well, despite breaking a bow limb only days before the competition and having to shoot with unfamiliar kit.  This shoot also included a Home Nations match, with each country being represented by the highest scoring senior man and woman, plus the highest scoring junior.  This year, Ballands/Somerset had the honour of providing the entire England Team, whilst Jane and Andrew also won the married couples competition.

Somerset Team is Victorious Again!

The Somerset team returned to their winning ways at the Inter-Counties competition on Sunday, taking home a significant number of the trophies, including the overall team prize.  Shooting conditions on the day were better than expected, and the team held off a strong challenge from DCAS to win the overall team prize by about 100 points.  Our recurves were the backbone of the team once again, making up for our relative weaker areas of compound and longbow, as they won every trophy on offer namely both individual gents (Mark Jones) and individual ladies (Vikki Atkins), Hereford team, York team, and mixed team.  Robin Jarvis also won the individual gents compound trophy to add to Somerset's coffers.

Grand Western Outdoor Championships Results

Somerset archers figured strongly in the Regional Championship results last weekend.  A clean sweep in the compound division saw Claire Davy and Tim Jarvis win the individual trophies, and they also won the team trophy for Bath Archers with help from Damian Le Gresley.  Mark Jones of Puriton Gold won the gent's recurve ahead of Kevin Sheppard (University of Bath) and Kerry Morgan (Puriton Gold), making it a clean sweep for Somerset clubs.  The ladies' recurve was our weakest category this year, with Yvonne Oakshott of Hatch finishing third, but despite this, Puriton Gold still won the recurve club trophy, adding to Somerset's trophy tally.  Top score in the ladies longbow also went to Somerset courtesy of Gerry Gilmour of Bath Archers, and it was only in the gents longbow where we failed to win anything.

Full results should be appearing soon on the GWAS website.

County Outdoor Championships Results

The 57th Somerset County Championships were held last Sunday, 13th June, at their usual venue in Dunster Castle grounds.  The weather was warm and sunny, with only a moderate "Dunster Wind", but despite this, scores were still relatively low.  Chris Hassall was tournament organiser, though as usual, he admitted that much of the organisation was done by the Dunster Week team headed by Janet Faralewski.  Amanda Tompkins was invited as Lady Paramount to thank her for her services to the County, in particular for organising the Inter-Club for 15 years.

Full results will follow once Chris has returned home from Dunster, but here is a summary of what I can remember from the presentation, along with some pictures I took.  Vicki Atkins won the Ladies Recurve ahead of Lynne Evans and Lesley Passey, and Claire Davy won the Ladies Compound.  Mark Jones won the Gents Recurve ahead of Kevin Sheppard and Matt Yeates, and in the Compound Tim Jarvis beat his Dad Robin, with Paul Atkins in third.  Puriton won the nominated pairs trophy thanks to Mark Jones and Amanda Tompkins.

Roll on the regional championships this weekend, and good luck to all Somerset archers!

Longbow Records and Scoring

Two proposals will be discussed at the next SCAA council meeting relating to longbows.  The first is on the matter of longbow county records - the current rule on this is that new records can be claimed if the score is at least 50% of the current recurve record.  It has been pointed out that this is rather unfair, especially for the longer outdoor rounds, so it is going to be proposed at the next meeting that this rule is scrapped.  If the proposal is accepted, then all longbow archers will be asked to submit their best scores from competitions between November 2004 and March 2005 for indoor rounds and April 2005 to October 2005 for outdoor rounds.  The best score for each round will then be made the county record, and then further record claims after that will be processed per the normal recurve and compound procedures.

The second is on the subject of whether county longbow competitions should have the winner decided based on hits (as is currently done) or score (as with recurve and compound).  A proposal will be made at the next meeting to change it to score for the 2005 season onwards, as apparently this is what most longbow archers want.

If you have strong views on either of these matters, please put it in writing to the County Secretary, or come along to the October meeting on the 13th October at Puriton Sports Club from 7.45pm.

Equipment Up For Grabs

The County has some old equipment up for grabs which has in the past been used at the Battle of Britain FITA and the Junior Championships.  It has been taking up space in our equipment officer's shed, and at the recent council meeting it was decided to give the equipment out to Somerset clubs.  Items will be awarded to clubs at the next SCAA council meeting based on either the highest bidder for the item (donations to go to charity), or the best reason for needing it.

Please use the form below to request items from the equipment list:

County Indoor Championships Results

There was a surprise result in the Gents Recurve section at this year when the regional champion and firm favourite for the title, Mark Jones of Puriton, could only manage third at his county championships.  Vince Green of Burnham was the victor on the day, celebrating his return to the sport after several years out.  Vince shot an excellent score of 571, which was only a point off his junior record which he shot 16 years ago!  Colin Fullalove of Bath also shot well to push Mark down into third.

The other main senior categories went more to expectations, with Amanda Tompkins of Puriton winning the ladies recurve, despite a bad cold, and Claire Davy and Tim Jarvis winning the Ladies and Gents Compound sections respectively.  There were also many more good performances, with a total of 18 champions on the day across all the junior categories and other bow types.

As usual, the day was smoothly run, thanks to torunament organiser Chris Hassall and Mid Somerset Bowmen.  Judge Andrew Chitty supervised both sessions, with Chris helping in a field captain role.  Shirley Woods had a very enjoyable day as Lady Paramount.
